Mount Meru
Scenic Trekking in the Wilderness
Mount Meru is a spectacular and challenging multi-day trek up Tanzania's second-highest volcano, often considered the ultimate "warm-up" for Kilimanjaro but a world-class adventure in its own right. It offers unparalleled wildlife viewing, dramatic landscapes, and one of Africa's most breathtaking summit views.
1. The "Acapulco" of Trekking: A Wildlife Safari on Foot
This is the most unique feature of Mount Meru. The trek begins in Arusha National Park, and for the first day, you are almost guaranteed to see wildlife like giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, and various antelope. Because of the potential for big game, an armed park ranger is mandatory to accompany your group. This adds a thrilling dimension you won't find on Kilimanjaro
2. The "Kilimanjaro Warm-Up" Myth (and Reality)
The Myth: Many people climb it solely to acclimatize for Kilimanjaro. It's excellent for this, as it helps your body adjust to altitude.
The Reality: Calling it just a warm-up is a major disservice. Meru is a serious and demanding climb. Its summit night is arguably steeper and more technical than Kilimanjaro's, involving some scrambling and narrow ridges. Underestimating it is a mistake.
