One of the most important parameters to consider while trekking Mount Kilimanjaro is the safety that also influences the rate of comfortability and success of summiting. The best way to allow a successful trekking starts with the right gears checking especially enough days before starting the trekking itineraries.

 

The following are the most required and important gears to pack for Mount Kilimanjaro trekking in person;

 

Essential Clothing

  • 1-2 breathable long-sleeve shirts
  • 2-3 moisture-wicking T-shirts
  • 1 warm thermal base layer top (merino or Polartec preferred)
  • 1 thermal base layer bottom
  • Fleece jacket
  • Insulated down jacket
  • Waterproof and windproof shell jacket with hood (Gore-Tex or similar)
  • 1-2 trekking pants (leggings okay for women, but not warm enough alone at high altitudes)
  • 1 insulated trekking pant (for summit night, layered over thermals)
  • 1 trekking short
  • Waterproof overpants

 

Footwear & socks

  • 3 pairs hiking socks (merino wool preferred)
  • 2 pairs thermal socks
  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Trekking and approach shoes
  • Camp sandals

 

Accessories

  • Lightweight glove liners
  • Insulated gloves or mittens
  • 2-3 hand and feet warmers
  • High-quality sunglasses with side protection
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Buff or neck gaiter
  • Warm winter beanie

  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Altitude meds (e.g. Diamox)

  • Lozenges (a lot)
  • Anti-diarrhea and allergy medications
  • Band-aids
  • YOU MUST CONSULT a pharmacist for vaccines and other recommendations regarding Tanzania.

Other Essentials

  • Energy snacks, gels, or electrolyte powder
  • Electrolyte tablets or flavor drops
  • Journal, book, or playing cards
  • 1-2 Power banks and charging cables
  • Phone and/or camera
  • Musical instrument (if you play!)

 

Important Notes

  • Moshi town clothing: Bring casual, comfortable clothes for before and after the trek.
  • Weight limit: Porters will carry up to 15kg of your gear. Pack smart and keep it under the limit.
  • Tipping: Budget from 500USD for tipping guides and porters - a meaningful way to thank the local crew for supporting your successful trekking adventure!

Travel Insurance 

Make sure you're protected. Your travel insurance plan should include 6000m high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation coverage. It's obligatory for Kilimanjaro.
