Visit Mikumi With Fellow Traveling Minds
Mikumi National Park is located in southern Tanzania, conveniently positioned between the famous Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. Its accessibility from Dar es Salaam makes it one of the most popular destinations for travelers seeking a short yet rewarding safari experience. The park is traversed by a main road connecting Dar es Salaam and Iringa, which allows easy entry for day visitors.
The highlight of Mikumi lies in the Mkata Floodplains. Often compared to the renowned Serengeti Plains, these expansive grasslands are home to large herds of wildlife and the predators that follow them. It is here that lions are often spotted resting on termite mounds, surveying the vast plains dotted with zebra, wildebeest, impala, and buffalo.
Mikumi, transected by the surfaced road from Dar es Salaam to Iringa is the most accessible park in the Southern circuit. The centerpiece of Mikumi is the abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplains that draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains. Lions survey their grassy kingdom – and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that migrate across it – from the flattened tops of termite mounds. It is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania to view the eland, the world’s largest antelope.
Trip Itinerary
A Mikumi National Park day trip is ideal for travelers who are short on time but do not want to miss the thrill of an African safari. Unlike longer itineraries that require several days, a day trip here can provide almost as much variety and excitement as multi-day tours. Its proximity to Dar es Salaam means visitors can set out early in the morning, enjoy game drives in the park, and return the same evening.
This accessibility makes Mikumi particularly attractive to business travelers in Dar es Salaam, families on a tight schedule, and adventurers seeking a cost-effective way to experience Tanzania’s wildlife without extensive planning.
Earlier this morning, our safari guide will pick you up from the airport in Dar es salaam or being picked up from your accommodation in Dar es salaam to the meeting point where the safari journey starts from. A drive of about 3 hours gives a chance to see the other parts of the city while getting close to the nature and wilderness of Mikumi. After the permits check-in, the game drive starts from there heading to the deeper parts of Mikumi exploring the wildlife and all the moments nature offers.
In the afternoon, a lunch break tends to divide the game drive into two where it makes an adventure more relaxed and meaningful before embarking again into the late afternoon game drive before starting to drive back to Dar es salaam.
A day spent well in Mikumi, in a shared safari package has a lot to mean for adventurers willing to join each other for a typical safari day in this southern park of Tanzania.
